3 Questions You Should Always Ask Yourself Prior To Choosing A Skylight

Investing in skylight for your home should never be something that you do in an arbitrary manner. Most of the time, doing this results in regrets later on, and so should ideally be avoided as much as possible. When you are in the process of choosing skylight for your home, there are a few questions that you might need to ask yourself in order to end up making a better decision on what to get. If you work with a qualified contractor, chances are that they will be able to walk you through some of these so that you can end up making the right decisions. Either way, it’s still important to know about some of the pertinent issues that should affect your choice of skylight material, even if just for the sake of general knowledge. Some of these include:

Do you need the glass to have thermal properties?

There are times when you will need the skylight glass to have some thermal properties. For instance, if you live in a very cold area, you will need to heat the house especially during the winter. Installing a skylight in such cases could be a bad move, especially if you don’t choose the right ones for this purpose. This is because they may end up being a major source of heat loss to the environment. The only way to prevent this is by getting skylight that has insulating properties, such as by having glazing. It’s also important to make sure that it’s installed properly, so that parts of the skylight such as the glazing don’t lead to heat loss.

Is it going to be load-bearing?

Your choice of skylight should also be informed by whether or not the skylight is going to be a load bearing one or not. For instance, if you are going to put the skylight on a flat roof, you can be sure that if you live in an area where it snows a lot, some of it will accumulate on the skylight. If it is not strong enough to bear such loads, it is likely to crack and break, and sometimes even lead to injury.

If you are sure that the skylight will bear a load at some point in its life, you may also need to find out how much of a load this will be. This will then help determine the ideal structural properties that it’s supposed to have in order to function properly.

Is condensation a problem for you?

In some cases, having some condensation on the skylight will be tolerable, and in some cases it might be a major problem. When you are thinking of installing one, it’s important to find out where you stand as far as this is concerned. This will then help you decide on how to install the skylight, since you will have to choose from different options depending on what you want. For instance, if you don’t want any condensation, you will need to install an exhaust fan around the skylight.
