Designing Your Attic Into A Bedroom With Skylights

If you want to convert your attic into a bedroom, there are certain things that you should put into consideration. Firstly, the attic floor is not strong enough to hold a lot of weight.  You must provide architectural strength for it to hold any furniture that you may install up there. Secondly, if you want to turn the attic into a bedroom, there must be enough ventilation. This is facilitated well by incorporating skylights on your roof. Attic skylights not only give the room enough ventilation, they also offer options for emergency escape. You should also provide a reachable stairway that leads into the attic for easy access.

Installing attic skylights for ventilation

The good thing with skylights is that they serve three purposes. They are good for ensuring that your attic is well ventilated and they also bring in natural light and save you a lot of energy costs. They bring beauty to the room by providing it with a special light illumination, and they open up your attic to the outdoors.

Depending on the design of your home, there are other options for attic skylights. The main idea for skylights is to bring in light and ventilation. If you have an alternative ventilation system, you can install fixed skylights. They offer additional light as well as opening up the attic to the outside. They are easy to construct since they can just be embedded at the roof level. However, they do not open up to the outside.

If you want your skylight to work best for the attic, install it as a ventilating window. You install it at the same pitch as the roof hence saving on any other additional supporting structures. It will be easy to access and maintain when you build it this way. Whether you install a standard tilting window or a hinged window that opens upwards, make sure that it can serve as an emergency escape for the attic.

Adhere to building codes

Sometimes you can have a brilliant idea that sweeps you off your feet and you forget to observe safety measures. Ensure that whatever design that you get for your skyline, you observe e-safety first. Do not weaken the roof as you try to install a skyline. Have a professional come and look at your home and advice you on how to do it best.

If you did not have a skylight before, seek professional advice, state permits and planning regulations. The same applies if you want to extend the size of your existing skylines. If you make any cuts to the roof to add a window size, you are required to compensate the cut by constructing a strong frame. Look at construction regulations pertaining the sizes and designs of your preferred skylines.

As you finish your attic conversion do not forget to install a good heating system. The attic tends to freeze during the winter and the skylight will be too covered up to help you.  You can re-shingle some portions of the roof during installation. You should also have a secure electrical system for heating, air-conditioning as well as plumbing.
