Taking Care Of Your Skylights To Prevent Major Damages

Skylights are light transmitters that are installed on the roof to give an overhead light illumination. They have been around in architecture since the age of ancient Roman architecture. They are popular in the world today since they not only add a sophisticated feel to the building, and they also reduce lighting and ventilation energy costs. You can have a different series of skylights depending on your preference. They range from transmission options, design and innovation, efficiency rating and many other features.

Since skylights are installed on the interior or exterior of overhead roof features, it is not always easy to reach them all the time. Therefore, they are normally skipped during the routine house cleaning sessions.

It is advisable that you clean your skylights at least twice a year to ensure that they remain in good condition. Cleaning skylights is not a very easy task since they are not within reach. If you follow the following guidelines, you will be able to clean them while ensuring safety for both you and the skylights.

Get the appropriate cleaning agents

Skylights are exposed to harsh weather all year long. Leaves, tree sap, dust, bugs and other debris can be stuck on your skylight. Cleaning it with water alone may not do the job efficiently. When gathering your cleaning agents, get one bucket for cleaning solutions and another one for clean, warm water. Get a good quality rubber squeeze, rubbing alcohol, spray bottles, rubber gloves, sudsy ammonia and good clean lint free wiping cloths.

Use the correct cleaning methods

Use a mild cleaning solution that is scratchproof and non-abrasive. Most window cleaners will leave your skylight with streaks if you are not in a position to reach it well.  Use a solution of water, rubbing alcohol and ammonia. It leaves your window clear and spotless. It also removes leaves and bugs that may be stuck on it.  Make a solution of 3.5 pints of cold water in a bucket. Add a cup of rubbing alcohol and a quarter cup of sudsy ammonia. The alcohol allows water to evaporate quickly hence leaving no streaks.

Take special care when cleaning skylights

If you want your skylights to look new and clear for long, you must handle them carefully.  Refrain from cleaning on scorching days since the heat contributes to more streaking. Do not scrub debris and bugs off the glass. Soak a piece of cloth into the cleaning solution and use it to soak and loosen dirt on the glass. Wipe the window using another piece of cloth with clear warm water from another bucket. If you are working on multiple rows of skylights, it is best if you start from the highest and work your way downwards.

Look out for weak points and repair them

As you do your cleaning, take the time to maintain them as well. Look out for any broken glass and repair them. You can also remove tree sap or rust from exterior skylight frames. If any of the hinges have become too loose or too tight, adjust them accordingly. It is easier to do small repair jobs on a skylight that to take it out and install a new one. Keep your maintenance records so that you know when to do routine follow-up
