Simple Steps to Repair Your Skylight

The end of the summer season signals several aspects that you must take care of in order to prevent unnecessary events from happening later. Checking for gaps between doors, between doors to walls, around pipes, heating unit, roof skylights is very important. Roof skylight can be the cause for several leaks. Therefore, examine the skylight closely to determine any holes. Make sure that the curb or the area around the skylight is gap-free. If this not done, then you not face a problem of leakage in the rainy season but also a colder winter as the gap expands in winter season if there is any water present in the gaps. Read on to know how to repair or replace the roof skylight that gives way to leaks. A simple repair in time can help avoid a replacement. Simply check the rubber seal around the skylight, curb and the flashing. Do remember all the areas that have gaps, or better mark the gaps with a chalk as and when you see them. Take special note of nails as they many of them would be exposed. Nail them down as they may cause leaks in rainy season by coming out. Ensure nails are covered by the flashing material. Patch the gaps with a sealant and apply a liquid roof coating to the area around the roof skylight.

This is a window or opening on your rooftop that allows natural sunlight to enter the house and make the area glow with warm colors. If you are installing a skylight, then do know the problems that you might face in the course. Here are some problems and their possible solutions. Installing skylight in your desired place of the house can be a problem if the room’s ceiling is not so close to the actual roof. In such cases, an attic usually lies in between the room and the roof. But don’t worry as you can make a light shaft in the room that can also connect to the roof. Using DIY models, you can cut appropriate hole in the roof and place the skylight. This is called a flashing model and a professional installation would be better. If there was a space between the skylight and the roof while installing skylight, then you are sure to experience leaks in the rainy season. Remember not to break the roof tiles by walking on them! Take them away before you want to install the DIY flush-mount self-flashing skylight. If you do not have an attic then you can carefully cut the roof and insulation in the desired size. Install the skylight and obstruct the gaps between the rafters.

How to Clean or Repair Your Skylight

It’s the start of freezing winter and you started experiencing problems with your skylight. You wonder why it is dull and leaking. Start considering a skylight replacement or repair. This very thought makes you postpone the job to the end of winter because of cost and complexity. Cleaning or replacing skylights isn’t as complex as it sounds to be. Skylight replacement is quick and easy if you follow the proper method. Get your tool kit and reach the skylight from the roof and follow this quick guide. Clean any dust and debris. Check the skylight dome and the flashing. Unscrew the screws that surround the skylight. Gently remove the domes from their place and separate the inner and outer dome using a knife to avoid breakage. Clean away the moisture and any grime present on domes using mild soap and lukewarm water. Blot them dry using a damp cloth. If the domes are not cracked and worn, you can still use them after cleaning. However, if the domes are damaged, you need to replace them with new ones. In which case, you can skip the cleaning and separating old domes. Apply silicone caulk to the inner dome after replacing it on the frame ensuring all gaps are sealed. Place the outer dome over the inner dome gently and ensure all screws are fastened tight enough to withstand harsh weather. Place the domes in the proper retaining angle.
