Basic Information About Skylight Windows

A skylight window is not a skylight in its strictest sense. Usually, it is a large window in a loft space or in a similar place. These are very effective windows when they are overlooking a writing desk and in areas of rooms where good lighting is a standard requirement. These windows are popular in attic spaces that are converted into small bedrooms for children as they allow a lot of light and make the area look much larger than it is actually. These skylight windows have the ability to expand your indoor areas into beautiful living areas filled with daylight, outdoor views, and fresh air. These windows can be designed for in-reach and out-of-reach installation, depending on your specific requirements. Once you have installed a window skylight in your attic space, you have installed the ultimate light and ventilation solution for your house. If these are roof windows, they can be top hinged ones that open up to provide maximum ventilation. They can also be balcony roof windows that are more suitable in case your requirement is mainly for daylight. Skylight Repair - A Few Basic Tips

Skylights are nothing but horizontal windows that are located at the roof of buildings and are generally used for day lighting. These devices allow an even distribution of light over a space. Thanks to technical innovations, today there are various styles of sunlights available in the market – right from traditional ones to technically advanced and trendy ones. However, all of these sunlights have to face different problems such as leaking resulting in severe property damage. Continuous leakage over a longer period of time can lead to the following damages to your property: Mold and mildew - Water leaking through skylight during rains enter the space between the roof and interior ceiling. The insulation of ceiling soaks up the water and allows the growth of mold and mildew. This mold and fungi are more frequently seen in enclosed places. How To Install A Skylight On Your Roof

There are two types of skylights to install – a Curb Mounted Skylight and a Self Flashing Skylight. The curb mounted skylights require a curb pre-built on to the roof opening while a self flashing skylight usually comes pre-equipped with the curb built on to the skylight. Steps to install a curb mount skylight: 1) This starts with constructing a curb. While doing this, make sure that the inside curb dimensions are the same as your roof openings. 2) Attach the curb to the roof deck where you want to place it. Toe nail curb to the deck of roof and run your shingles up to the bottom edge of curb. 3) Now start flashing the curb. While preformed flashing is ideal, step flashing can also be sufficient. Ensure that your flashing overlaps as much as your shingles do. 4) Now complete the shingling of your roof. After this, place a strip of foam weather stripping on top of your wooden curb. Finally, place skylight over your curb, ensuring it slips all the way down on your foam to reduce air infiltration and ex-filtration. Fix your skylight to curb with either galvanized nails or stainless steel wood screws through the pre-drilled holes.
