Flat Roof Skylights: Be Your Neighbor's Envy

The trick to create the feel of spaciousness life, cheer and value to your home is to illuminate it properly. A skylight installed on the ceiling allows more light into the room than a vertical window. However, you have to make sure that the right kind of skylight is accompanied by the specific roof type. For example, flat roof skylights are designed differently from those for sloped roofs. One must consider these factors before installing the skylights on the roofs. Skylights that are used for flat roofs are usually domed in order to promote drainage as these roofs are more vulnerable to drainage problems. The chances of water pooling are more if flat skylights are installed on these roofs. Hence, roof skylight experts suggest using dome skylights for such roof types. If you are using a flat profile skylight, do make sure that it is pitched at the minimum of one inch per foot of the skylight's width. It is also essential to make sure that the skylight, with its minimum pitch established by the manufacturer, is suitable for flat roofs. Sometimes, a skylight might not be intended for low-pitch roofs or can be used only after adding some significant slope. Skylights with poor drainage mechanism, will fail soon. Therefore, it is important to judge the suitability of such sunlight before installation.

The Advantages Of Dome Skylights For Homes

Dome skylights are useful in many ways to the homeowner. Since they are light weight, they are easy to install, operate and maintain. These types of skylights are best for areas where climate conditions are extreme as they keep energy transfer to a minimum. There are different varieties of these skylights. You can purchase them as a single, double, or triple dome. If you want more energy efficient ones, then you should only consider a double or triple dome. Dome skylights are suitable for any type of roof, including flat roofs. In fact, they are more suited for flat roofs because of the fact that they shed water quickly due to the "self-cleaning" aspect of the dome. Usually, the dome's height is around 25% of the width of the skylight that allows the water to quickly flow off the surface. These skylights also have the ability to gather light from different angles. Unlike flat skylight, they allow in more light. If you want to illuminate a room, then a clear acrylic dome is the best option. If you are looking for a more lighting effect then a white or bronze acrylic dome is the best choice especially for light-sensitive people. Finally, these are very strong kinds of skylight and hence offer better safety.

Handy Tips For Selecting Skylights

Skylights are useful addition to almost any house. When selecting a skylight, you must be aware of the minimal functionality they offer. Skylights must allow for natural day lighting while reducing the heat. They must block the humid air from seeping in and similarly, warmth should not leak out of the house in winter. In areas prone to storms and hurricanes, skylights must withstand the forces of such natural terrors. When buying a skylight, there are few aspects that you should look into. U-factor: Skylights should preferably have U-factor below 0.75. This measures how efficient the material is in blocking the heat of the sun's rays. Higher the percentages, more the amounts of sunlight pass through the skylight. Visible Transmittance: Skylight must have higher values of Visible Transmittance. This simply means that more amount of light passes through them. Tinted coatings are preferred as they regulate the amount of light. Condensation Resistance: The higher condensation resistance rating means that the material is superior in preventing the formation of condensation. Generally, skylights must also be shaded properly to prevent excessive heat gain. Plastic skylights should be used minimally in hot climate areas as the heat and the sun's rays will soon discolor the plastic.

Skylights To Bring In Sunlight

Skylights bring in the natural sun light into the room. This makes the room appear larger, and reveal its true colors. Apart from these benefits, it also minimizes eyestrain, increases the productivity, and reduces electricity consumption. The skylights come in various sizes and shapes that can be easily integrated into your ceiling and roofing construction. An increased use of natural light can help decrease your overall energy costs. For the best functionality, skylights should and must be placed where the sun can shine on them directly. A skylight would not be very effective in area or a house that is shaded by adjacent structures or foliage. Similarly, they are not useful in areas that have heavy cloud cover for a large period of time. There are many companies that manufacture skylights. However, the most common materials used to manufacture them are glass, glass composites, plastics and plastic composites. All of these materials can be treated to minimize light transmission and cooling load. The advantages of glass skylight include durability, high light transmission, hardness and rigidity. The main shortcoming of glass is its vulnerability to breakage. It also raises doubts about safety hazard that falling glass creates. Contrary, plastic materials are lighter in weight, and they are resistant to shattering, posing only a minimal safety hazard.

Benefits Of Skylights

Skylights help you make a lackluster room look bright. They are able to provide up to 30% more light than regular windows which can transform a room - giving it an open, airy feeling. Similar to windows, skylights can be fixed and operated the same way. While fixed ones may be flat or domed, and they obviously only provide light, there are other kinds of skylights that offer ventilation. Some of them can be opened or closed using a hand crank, a remote control, a wall switch, or an automatic temperature sensor. Skylights offer you multiple benefits at one time. Some of them are noted below: - Skylights save you money by reducing the number of electricity fixtures required to be installed in a room otherwise. They also provide much required warmth during the winter and cooling in the summer that in turn minimizes your need for heating and air conditioning. - During the winter, the sun's heat radiates into a room while during the summer, a ventilating skylight will add to your air circulation by releasing the warm air. This makes the room feel cooler and comfortable. - They come in different shapes and sizes giving you ample choices to select the best for your room.
