It’s the start of freezing winter and you started experiencing problems with your skylight. You wonder why it is dull and leaking. Start considering a skylight replacement or repair. This very thought makes you postpone the job to the end of winter because of cost and complexity. Cleaning or replacing skylights isn’t as complex as it sounds to be.
Skylight replacement is quick and easy if you follow the proper method. Get your tool kit and reach the skylight from the roof and follow this quick guide.
Clean any dust and debris. Check the skylight dome and the flashing. Unscrew the screws that surround the skylight. Gently remove the domes from their place and separate the inner and outer dome using a knife to avoid breakage. Clean away the moisture and any grime present on domes using mild soap and lukewarm water. Blot them dry using a damp cloth. If the domes are not cracked and worn, you can still use them after cleaning. However, if the domes are damaged, you need to replace them with new ones. In which case, you can skip the cleaning and separating old domes. Apply silicone caulk to the inner dome after replacing it on the frame ensuring all gaps are sealed. Place the outer dome over the inner dome gently and ensure all screws are fastened tight enough to withstand harsh weather. Place the domes in the proper retaining angle.
