There are two types of skylights to install – a
Curb Mounted Skylight and a Self Flashing Skylight. The curb mounted skylights require a curb pre-built on to the roof opening while a self flashing skylight usually comes pre-equipped with the curb built on to the skylight.
Steps to install a curb mount skylight:
1) This starts with constructing a curb. While doing this, make sure that the inside curb dimensions are the same as your roof openings.
2) Attach the curb to the roof deck where you want to place it. Toe nail curb to the deck of roof and run your shingles up to the bottom edge of curb.
3) Now start flashing the curb. While preformed flashing is ideal, step flashing can also be sufficient. Ensure that your flashing overlaps as much as your shingles do.
4) Now complete the shingling of your roof. After this, place a strip of foam weather stripping on top of your wooden curb.
Finally, place skylight over your curb, ensuring it slips all the way down on your foam to reduce air infiltration and ex-filtration. Fix your skylight to curb with either galvanized nails or stainless steel wood screws through the pre-drilled holes.
