5 Awesome Things You Should Know About Skylights

Most people would undoubtedly be intrigued by the idea of being closer to nature while at the same time staying indoors. Skylights provide a bridge between the outside world and your interior space. Whether or not you have them installed in your house, it is useful to understand how there is so much more than meets the eye. One thing is for sure... they are not just "any window" on your roof!

They are aesthetically more creative

As compared to normal windows, skylights seem more pretty and unique because they are installed on the roof or ceilings of houses. Another difference is that skylights can take on the angle of your roof. There is much versatility to its design as it can be slanted at an angle or just laid flat on the top. Due to its relatively more flexible nature, there would be more room for you to play with in terms of interior design.

While windows are straight no matter where you put them, skylights can take on various angles and shapes depending on where you choose to position them. They can be installed almost anywhere – your living room, bedroom or kitchen – wherever you deem fit.

Moreover, not every household has skylights installed, which is why some people may regard it as a special architectural feature. If you want to set your house apart from others in its design, skylights could be one way to go. They carry more architectural detail and style which explains why they are more aesthetically pleasing.

They allow you to be in touch with nature

Imagine looking at the raindrops from above while listening to your favorite radio station on a rainy day. Consider opening your skylight on a bright day and hearing the birds chirp or the wind rustle. Skylights provide a breath of fresh air. They allow people to go about star gazing at night or just see the clouds roll by on a sunny morning. It is an installation that makes people feel less claustrophobic about staying at home and provides the luxury of having ‘a window to the world’ right from their comfort zone.

Positioning your skylights differently will affect the amount of light you get. For example, installing them on the west or south of your roof will allow much sunlight to penetrate the room, whereas having them on the east or north side will result in considerably less light. So if you are against too much light in your living room, you would have to know which direction your skylight should be placed for your desired result. As such, playing around with the placements of skylights can help determine how much of nature you are exposed to when you are in different parts of the house.

They spare you from expensive electrical bills

Skylights help to save costs. They allow a certain amount of light and warmth into your house and retain them during the night. Of course, this can be achieved through good insulation as well as by controlling the opening and closing of your skylights. By keeping in some of the heat from the day, you are less obliged to turn on the heater for long periods of time.

There will also be less of a need to switch on your lights or lamps during the day, as the sunlight penetrating through your skylights are sufficient for you to go about your daily activities. In actuality, having skylights can save you from spending on a ridiculous amount of spotlights.

They improve your mood

Believe it or not, skylights not only brighten up your house, but can also make you happier! Generally, skylights add to the ambience of a room and in turn influence your mood. Having scenic views may help a person feel more relaxed, especially in our increasingly hectic world. A more conducive environment, therefore, aids in a psychologically-sound mind.

They make you feel healthier

Besides probably making you feel better, some people have gone to say that skylights tend to make you physiologically healthier. While it is not healthy to be exposed to too much sunlight, controlling the opening and closing of your skylights can allow you to absorb the right amount of light. In doing so, the body produces small amounts of Vitamin D that improves your energy levels.

Skylights are also helpful to people living in seasonal countries. In late autumn or winter when the days are shorter, people tend to get insufficient exposure to sunlight. Having skylights enable you to have relatively more exposure despite being indoors and allows your body to produce the needed Vitamin D.

Of course, in order to achieve all this, it is crucial to check the quality of your skylights. Make sure they prevent leaks and are well insulated. For the best result, install blinds or covers so that you can control how much light you want in your rooms. Looking at the many advantages that skylights bring, it seems that they are really more than just windows on your ceilings.
