Tips for Skylight Installation

Skylight installation is the best way to add beauty to your home, thus making it look attractive and alluring. Skylights are accessories that help boost the glamour of your home in a very short time, giving it an entirely different look. Installing a skylight involves procedure and technique which needs some prior experience in skylight installation. The best and easiest way to accomplish this is to seek the services of a skylight specialist, who stands apart from the ordinary carpenter or roofer with his specialized experience in the field of skylight installation. Another option that you could consider is the do it yourself method, where it is absolutely essential to buy a skylight that has detailed instructions on installation, as faulty installation is more often the cause of future repairs than the skylight itself. There are many types and models of skylights available in the market making it difficult for you to pick the right skylight that illuminates your dream home. Factors like room size, skylight position and the price of the skylight play a major role in determining your choice. By choosing the right skylight for your home, style and energy efficiency are no longer difficult to establish!

The Significance of Flashing in Skylight Installation

Depending upon the design of your skylight, you need to follow a particular procedure for its installation. The two main types of skylights can be determined by the way their flashing and curb are built. Curb mounted skylights require a pre-built curb on the roof opening, while self flashing skylights have the curb built along with it. Both curb mounted and self flashing skylights follow similar steps for installation up to the point where the curb has to be flashed. Of course, as the former variety needs the curb to be ready on the roof, you need to construct a curb either by yourself or with the help of a professional skylight installer. While flashing the curb mounted skylight, using step flashing is enough, though preformed flashing is the ideal one. The flashing must overlap as much as the shingles do, and is fixed down over at least a rung of shingles. At the bottom of the curb, the flashing should overlap across the curb’s top and upon each side of its sides. To install the self flashing skylight, you simply need to fix it onto the roof, in a position that opens directly atop the sealant. Fasten it with screws or nails and on both sloping sides at the built-in flashing’s outer edge. The bottom of self flashing skylights is exposed on top of the shingles.

Skylight Leaks and Repairs

Changing weather from hot to cold can lead to expansion and contraction of substances. Skylights are also among the things that get affected by this. Accumulation of water in the gaps in skylight is the main reason for skylight leaks. At the time of low temperatures, this water freezes and expands, also leading to the expansion of gap. When this procedure repeats three to four times, the water escapes in the form of leaks. The solution for skylight leaks problem is either skylight repair or skylight replacement. Most of the times, repair of the skylight works out and the latter is not required. Further, replacement of skylight also means addition of expenses and starting a construction project in house. However, with proper materials and knowledge, even old skylights can also be repaired easily. Firstly, it is necessary to find out the places of leaks which often are along the rubber lining between metal and glass. Thus, it is better to inspect all the worn out spots and cracks. Also, when skylights are fixed on shingled roofs, many times nailing is not fully done and water collects between the nail head and the surface. This can be prevented by hitting the nails completely. Remember to call in an expert if you aren’t sure about repairing them yourself.

Skylight Benefits - Beyond Lighting

As skylights provide about 30% more light than common windows, even small rooms with less wall space are illuminated with natural light by them. Skylights with clear glass direct sunlight to a spot, while acrylic or obscure glass spread it across a large area. But the benefits of skylights aren’t limited to the excellent lighting options they provide. While fixed skylights only provide light, other models can be opened or closed by a remote control, wall switch or even a temperature sensor. Thus, operated skylights also serve the purpose of air conditioning in your room. Modern skylights come with low-emissivity and tinted coatings to control both heat and UV ray transmission. Special blinds for skylights are also available. In winter, the skylight allows the sun’s heat to radiate within your room. In summer, the ventilating skylight releases warm air and adds to air circulation, making your room feel cooler. Thus, skylights save your electricity bills by minimizing your need for ventilation, lighting and air conditioning. A tubular skylight, in particular, provides a combination of a reflective shaft and a diffuser to spread light, thus allowing in great amounts of light and minimizing heat transfer effectively, both for its limited size. Toronto skylight retailers let you know the best skylight for every room in your home, and even provide information about the various styles, features and sizes available. Ask your retailer all your questions, and they’ll be pleased to answer.
