Skylights Must Have Adequate Ventilation

As simple as this sound it comes with a lot of points to consider during the entire installation process. There are a number of issues that need to be addressed when talking about skylights and one of the major ones is that of ventilation. The point of skylights is not just to look pretty but to be energy efficient and practically functional. The key function is that there is enough air flowing in through and out of the skylight. The intake vents and the exhaust outlets should in no way be obstructed as this will lead to a multitude of other problems, but mostly the people in the house or apartment will be extremely uncomfortable.

These are magnificent windows to world, giving you a glimpse to the sky and world above which is unlike your usual window but its construction and design also means that there will be a lot of drafts and this can get extremely uncomfortable for the people sitting in the room. What you want is just enough air circulating in the room so that it does not feel too claustrophobic or too breezy at the same time. A lot of it also depends on the weather outside as well. As much openness and invigoration the skylight may be adding to the entire setup it must also be ensured that it does not make the inhabitants or occupants feel out of place and uncomfortable, for then it loses its charm and practicality. A skylight generally loses about forty five percent more heat during the winter months because heat rises, of course. When this hot air rises it comes into contact with the cold skylight and so that air is cooled off. This obviously tends to create rather unnatural and uncomfortable drafts in the room. When the point of staying indoors is to stay warm during these winter months, this can be quite a problem. The only way to combat this kind of a problem is to ensure that there is adequate and proper ventilation available.

There are numerous solutions that you can incorporate to ensure that you are getting the most out of your skylight, especially in terms of ventilation. There should be air and exhaust vents installed with the skylights because regardless of how long a winter season may last you will require this to ensure that your house, room or apartment is properly ventilated. One of the main problems with these vents and with the skylights itself is the formation of icicles on the edges and a large build up of ice dams on the roof and the frames of the skylights. Eventually once this happens the water build up leaks through the roof and the walls, infiltrating your room and creating more problems than you would initially expect. But there are solutions to this problem as well. A notch should be cut on both the upper and lower sides of the rafters, this will allow the air to move freely through the air vents and exhausts and during the winter month’s storm panels should be installed. This will reduce the warm air that escapes and also cut off most of the drafts making it more comfortable in the house and leaving less work since there will be hardly any ice formation or ice dams. Having a high ceiling can be more of a problem since they require more ventilation, for this air barriers, equal soffit and ridge outlets should be installed to ensure that there is adequate and sufficient air ventilation from the lower portion of skylight.

As beautiful and amazing as skylights are giving us a glimpse of the outside world it also comes with its drawbacks: condensation and air infiltration. Usually skylights that are well constructed and installed are free from the problem of condensation. But if this is not the case then you might have quite a nuisance on your hands. Usually with improper installation air infiltrates through the space between the frame and the glazing. So basically during any installation process you have to make sure that it all goes off smoothly. There are a number of benefits to having a skylight like proper sunlight, alleviation of depression, increasing work efficiency. Always make sure that you are consulting a professional when deciding to install a system. Make sure that you choose and pick high quality systems this is an almost sure shot way apart from the installation process to ensure that you will not have very many problems once the ordeal is over with.
