Using Paint to Improve Skylights

Practically it also reduces the amount of energy consumption since it reduces the need for electric lighting. But it also comes with numerous cons as well. From leakages, to glare, if you have not properly constructed and installed the structure then you might have a bigger problem on your hands than you could be aware of. Too much light, heat and glare can cause a major lack of production and energy saving. But there have been a number of devices and techniques invented to combat these problems like blinds, shades, covers and window films. But these too have they good and bad points, like window films cannot be used on acrylic plexiglass which are polycarbonates and this is what makes up a large proportion of skylights that are available to the general public. Finding anything different is beyond difficult. These covers also have very limited life spans and tend to be destroyed easily. When it comes to blinds and other products they break as easily and require regular cleaning and maintenance which is hard to take care of especially since they are expensive.

However, with the progress in technology there is a new product that is relatively new. Now this might also be very expensive but it is definitely more worth it. This new product is high end solar reflective paint. This paint does not only allow all the light in but has other benefits as well like reducing the excessive heat, excessive light and excessive glare. This is expensive but a long term and durable option. The paint does not wear off and is not very hard to maintain at all so it is definitely worth the investment and so is very beneficial to business owners or people planning to buy a home or install skylights or roof lights or roofers. Of course, this is not a new idea and people have been painting skylights for a long time but they have been using the regular paints that have a lot of downsides of course, one of the main ones being that they do not allow a sufficient amount of light enter.

These exterior paints were not meant to be used on plexiglass or acrylic in the first place and so they do not set properly or look aesthetically pleasing, they tend to peel and look horrible in no time at all. They also come with this protective layer which is not meant to reject solar energy and is rather inefficient. These new solar reflective paints combat all these negative features of regular paints; they last long for up to eight to ten years and have components that reject and reflect infrared rays and ultraviolet rays which essentially makes up for more than half the solar energy spectrum. These paints are highly effective when it comes to reducing the glare and heat while allowing a sufficient amount of light to enter the room.

Using paint for these purposes is all well and good but you have to make sure that nothing else is making the atmosphere in the room feel uncomfortable. If there are gaps in the construction the ventilation may be hampered. A lot of hot air will be trapped in during the summer months or allowed in through the gaps while in the winter months it will feel uncomfortably cold thanks to these gaps. There is also the problem of condensation that can make it feel like it is raining your house or office. Then comes the problem of icicles forming during winter which can clog and block the airways and vents. All these problems must be seen to and checked beforehand otherwise it is a complete waste of an investment. The gradient, slopes and style and design of the skylights have their roles to play in the entire construction and utilization of such a thing.

This is why it is always best to consult a professional or someone who is in the business of installing skylights. There is a very thin line to be threading when it comes down to even the painting, you may end up investing more than you save and that is an obvious problem since most people invest in skylights particularly for the benefit of saving. It is all about the big picture. Skylights are always beautiful and when it comes to aesthetic value it is never disappointing but you must know what you are investing in and make sure it is of good quality.
