What is a Skylight?

A skylight is a special “light-transmitting fenestration,” or a part of the roof of a building, used to convey plentiful sunlight and top lighting, offering a connection between the occupants and the outdoor environment. These are often used to allow fresh air from outside to enter the space below. There are different types of skylights available in the market today, but the standard fixed-unit skylight comprise of a structural perimeter frame that supports a light transmitting panel with glazing infill, which is generally made from plastic or glass. On the other hand, a venting skylight has a glazed sash attached to it, which is supported by the structural frame. Often, these are termed as roof windows, when easily accessible to the occupants. Skylight Replacement or Repair – What Should You Do?

“Whether to repair or replace” - when it comes to skylights, this is one question that often boggles people’s mind. It is not always easy to determine whether to repair or go for skylight replacement, and there is a thumb rule that can rescue people from the horns of the dilemma. It is important to understand that situations are different for a skylight repair and replacement, and one has to consider the symptoms and needs first, in order to arrive at a decision – replacement or repair. In many situations, repairing a skylight is considered to be a smart choice, especially when the roof system or the skylight is relatively new, only 5 years old or even less, and leaks occasionally. In such a scenario, only nominal repair services can be sufficient. However, if the skylight ages between 5-10 years, and leaks persistently and heavily, it is time that you should go for a full repair service. For the roofing system which is 12-15 years old, skylight replacement is the wisest choice. With growing age, the insulation capability and UV resistance of the skyline diminishes, and it is better to replace before worse happens. However, for a tight budget, often repair is considered more effective than replacement.
