An interesting factor to consider when thinking about
skylights is their placement in the house. After all, every room in your house will probably not have a skylight in it, so in what rooms are skylights most beneficial?
The first room I would eliminate is the hallway, the entrance to your home. You will most likely not want a skylight in this area, as you probably do not spend much time there, and while it would look nice, it would probably be a waste of money. Another room in which you most likely don't want a skylight is your bathroom. You don't really need the additional lighting, and the ventilation could have the side effect of generating a cold draft.
The place you really do probably want a skylight will be your living room. This is where you most likely spend the most time, and so this is also the place you wish to make most comfortable. Also the large area of the living room allows for greater benefits from the ventilation that skylights provide. Another place you may want a skylight is your kitchen, if you spend a lot of time there. Here, by far the biggest benefit will be the ventilation, making sure your kitchen does not get too hot and stuffy. Skylights can also be placed in bedrooms. Personally, I have a tinted skylight in my bedroom, giving me a nice mood lighting effect, although you can have just a normal one helping you get some light into your bedroom during the day.
I hope that if you do choose to install skylights in your home, this will have helped you to decide where to put them.
